Four French vessels, three of them privately funded privateers, attack the harbour at Ferryland (Forillon), Newfoundland. The harbour is defended by 4 shore batteries mounting 30 guns, manned by the crew from the English privateer William and Mary (16) and other vessels in the harbour and commanded by the privateer's captain William Holman.
The lead French vessel, Aigle, ran aground in the entrance, blocking the access of the others. The Aigle was bombarded for 8-hours before finally being towed off.
The French flagship, Gaillard, remained at anchor outside the harbour and took no part in the action.
