One of the first actions of the war was fought in the North Sea between the English cruisers Yarmouth, 44, Diamond, 40, and Mermaid, 22, and the Dutch cruisers Eendracht, 32, and Jonge Leeuw, 22, in February, 1665 (sic). The vessels seem to have been scouting on behalf of their respective fleets. The Dutch ships, after a brave defence, were taken; and Cornelis Evertsen, " the Youngest," then a young man of three and twenty, in command of the Eendracht, became a prisoner: but the victory cost the life of Captain John Golding, of the Diamond.
