He was court martialled in Barbados, on three charges, only one of which was proved. He wrote a History of the West Indies . He was appointed valuer for the King of the slaves in Barbados and Demerara for compensation. He died on board ship returning from Demerara, 14 March 1838. He had served with Nelson and was of great assistance to his brother Robert who wrote the definitive “Life of Nelson”.
