Spelling at the time was more an art than a science. A quick look at a couple of the sources. His passing certificate spells his name Stewart, as does ADM 6/6/134, ADM 6/7/84 uses the alternate Stuart.
Just goes to show really, of course, in both cases it is Englishmen trying to spelling a Scots name though.

There are numerous references to him, both contemporary and later, as "James Steuart" (I accidentally wiped out a partial list and don't want to repeat the search that produced it), which makes sense if his father was "John Steuart." "Stewart" seems to be a mistake or a later occasional erroneous "correction."
