13.9.1673 Lieutenant William Stewart. In the morning the Captain said he should go to Fareham to get 3 men. He had business to do and sent a messenger to Wickham. The Captain took him to town and they dined with Mr Badd who said he would write to Captain Rolfe of Fareham to ask him to get men for the Captain. They met Mr Pye, Master of a hoy from Fareham, and there was a disagreement between the Lieutenant and the Captain regarding asking him to press men. After spending an hour with the Boatswain and the Doctor he waited for the Captain on the beach. When he eventually arrived he seemed angry. When they went on board there was a disagreement regarding some men who were leaving in a boat. The Captain said he would complain about the Lieutenant failing in his duty and he defended himself whereupon the Captain hit and kicked him and threatened to kill him. He cut him twice across the head when the Master's Mate intervened. He did not retaliate. Finally the Captain imprisoned him in his cabin with 3 sentries. He then commanded him to go pressing men. He said he would as soon as the Surgeon's Mate had dealt with his wound. The Surgeon's Mate said he was in no condition to go anywhere. He says he has never been so ill used. Captain Washborn was Lieutenant of the Mary when he was in the Straits and Mr Belbin was Master of the Tyger when he was with her. They can both certify his good conduct.ADM 106
15.9.1673 Robert Tippetts, Surgeon, Aycliffe Ivy, Surgeon, John Skinner, Surgeon and John Emery, Surgeon. Certify that on examination of Lieutenant William Stewart of the Reserve they find him incapable of performing his duty due to wounds received from Captain Grant.ADM 106
