Born ca. 1712 he was age 64 on 02 May 1776 when he was invalided from his last sea command. "Pursuant to an Order from Molyneux Shuldham Esqr Rear Admiral of the White and Commander in Chief of His Majesty’s Ships and Vessels employed and to be employed in North America, of this day’s to us directed. We whose names are hereunto Subscribed ( being the Surgeon and Agent for Sick and Hurt on board the Richmond Hospital Ship, and the Surgeons of His Majesty’s Ships Scarborough and Rose ) have this day been on board His Majesty’s Sloop Tamer, and there have strictly and impartially examined Captain Edward Thornbrough, of the said Sloop, touching his present state of Health. We find that the repeated attacks of the Gout which he has been Subject to upwards of Twenty years, he has almost entirely lost the use of his Hands and Feet. He is also Subject to frequent Biulious Disorders which have much relaxed and Weakened him. From the above Complaints and his Age, ( being in his Sixty fourth year ) We are of Opinion, that he is rendered totally incapable of performing the Duty as Commander of His Majesty’s Sloop Tamer. Given under our hands on board His Majesty’s Sloop Tamer in Halifax Harbour May 2d 1776. [signed] James Dickson, Robt Whyte & Ephraim Graebky" (ADM 1/484, f.553)
