Called "Thomas Tonken Jun'r" when commissioned by RADM James Gambier on 02 Apr 1779 (confirmed by Admiralty on 14 June 1779 [ADM6/21, p.570) as Lieutenant, HMS Jersey, Hospital Ship, the day before Gambier was superseded as CinC, North America. Presumably he was the son of Commander Thomas Tonken, the Principal Agent of Transports at New York.
