Portsmouth, 1 August 1801: Captain Whitby, Admiral Cornwallis’s Captain, arrived here on Wednesday, to join the Channel Fleet in the Malta, Captain Bertie. [Portsmouth Telegraph, 3 August 1801]

Circa 24 Apr 1802 Lieutenant Whitby, of the Leviathan, is promoted to the rank of Commander, and succeeds to the command of the Pelican.
