Stephen Elliot was originally master of a small trader in the West Indies. He had been given his commission as captain of the Maidstone in January, 1696, as a reward for having escaped from a French prison in San Domingo with valuable information respecting a projected attack on Jamaica in 1695. He consequently never served as a lieutenant.
