Thomas Tobiassz was originally Irish but he has been described as the most senior non Dutch officer in the Dutch navy, and a close friend and neighbour of Michiel Adriaanz De Ruyter. Apart from his commands, the highlight of his career was the capture of the Royal Charles during the Raid on the Medway 1667. I am most interested in tracing his Irish origins and when he entered Dutch service. Tobias is not a recognisable Irish name, but Tobin is. Also, from secondary sources, he was reported to be a Roman Catholic. Can anyone confirm?
