Mike M - I am very much aware of a Lt Col John Bower - he would have been James Paterson Bower's elder brother. Served in India. I have his diaries and some of his wife's jewellery. He lived to be 100 and died in 1901 - I think.

Hi Kim
I suspect that James Paterson Bower is at least your great-great grandfather - he is my great great grandfather and I am 70. I have access to lots of Bower family material if you are interested. Several are mentioned on Wikipedia but no one has yet pointed out the links - I need to get around to doing it!

Hi Kim, the Bower family were previous inhabitants of my home. I am just preparing a presentation on the history. Are you aware of a Lt Col John Bower?

Half pay meant that an officer was not currently employed at sea or in a home-based command. It did not affect seniority and promotion.
