According to Ruddock Mackay, _Admiral Hawke_, p. 78, "25-year old John Lockhart," commanding officer of fireship _Vulcan_ (which should have made him a commander), was appointed by Hawke to command of _Kent_, 64, in place of Capt. Thomas Fox (q.v.), suspended from command to be tried by court-martial for his behavior during the battle of October 14/25, 1747. "The Admiralty, however, would not confirm him."
Winfield (BWAS-1714), 347, does not record any change in CO of _Vulcan_ between appointment of Cmdr. Wm. Pettigrew in April 1746 and the end of the war. In Oct. 1747 Lockhart might have been temporary CO of _Vulcan_ and therefore have retained the rank of lieutenant.
Fox was dismissed from command of _Kent_ by the CM and replaced as CO by Capt. Francis Holburne (BWAS-14, p. 92).
