| 9.1.1795 | 1797 | By Decree of the Public Safety Committee of 20 Nivôse Year III (January 9, 1795) , Nicolas Lacoudrais and Michel-François Poullet , native of Tours , were chosen to accompany to Genoa two boxes of diamonds worth one million seven hundred twenty thousand Livres , and give them to the banker Jean-Luc Durazzo . Equipped with passports , preceded by a courier and escorted by two gendarmes , the commissioners made the trip in forty days . After having returned their deposit , one of them returned to France , the other remained in Italy : it was Nicolas Lacoudrais . Well received by the Envoy Extraordinary of the Republic , he was authorized by him to go to Tuscany to observe , as a former trader , the commercial relations that could be established there . He fulfilled this duty by staying in Livorno , Florence and Pisa in 1796 and 1797 . At the same time , he was able to gain the confidence of André-François Miot , Minister Plenipotentiary , who first attached him to the French Consulate , in Livorno , and authorized him to exercise in that port the functions of provisional vice-consul . His services were rightly appreciated there . "The first details you address to me," wrote the Minister , "prove to me that I was not mistaken in counting on your zeal and your intelligence; they guarantee me that you will continue to occupy yourself fruitfully with the various objects of public utility on which you must constantly pay your attention . "He was on the verge of being appointed to the Barcelona Consulate when he was recalled to Paris by Bénézech , Minister of the Interior , who informed him that his mission had long since ended .
