1867 Jean Frot invented an "ammonia machine" , which was to replace the steam engine.He presented it at the Universal Exhibition of 1867 and it received an award .The Navy then decided to build 2 machines by the arsenals .But technical difficulties arose and the project came to an end ...ref:673
