16.10.1695 Court Martial : Edward Thomson, Chief Mate, HMS Hope. Crime: Negligently performing his duty. Enquiry was made into the reason for HMS Captain and HMS Montague separating from HMS Hope, before she met with some enemy ships, to see if the commanders were at fault. Verdict: Guilty. Sentence: To be taken to every ship at Chatham and Gillingham with a halter round his neck and his crime read out at each, all pay due is forfeited to the Chest at Chatham and be rendered unable to serve in HM Navy as an officer.ADM 1/5256
