Thx for the info, very helpful. On review, it looks as though he was born circa 1727

To pass the lietenants exam, you are supposed to be at least 20 years of age with 6 years service, 2 of which must be as a master's mate or midshipman. The exam is a verbal one in front of a board of three senior officers. While some officer passed early, it is simply not possible for him to have been 8 at the time.
John's passing certificate states "...appears to be 21 years of age", hence the estimated date of birth. His first service was aa a captain's servant on the Deptford, c.1742.

The earliest entry is John's Lieut's exam in 1748. What would the youngest age of such a man be and what does the exam entail? My problem is that I have an estimated birthyear for John of 1740! Or does anyone have a confirmed birthyear please?
