Rear Admiral Samuel Graves was my gt x 3 grandfather, my great grandfather Lt.Col F.L. Graves R.A., who was his grandson said that he was fired upon while caring a flag of truce at Fort Ticonderoga and lost his arm. Another source said that he was shot in the arm aboard the 12 gun Carleton at the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain in 1776.

Commander Samuel Graves was serving as Senior Naval Officer of the N.Y. Lakes squadron on 15 Sep 1777 when Admiralty promoted him Captain, HMS Deal Castle, 6th/20, re-commissioned that date at Portsmouth (ADM 6/21, p.312). About the 1st of Oct 1777 Graves had his left arm shot off by a drunken soldier (CO 42/37, pp. 266-67) and following the surrender of Burgoyne's army and some recovery time, returned to England. On 24 Oct 1777 William Parker was commissioned by Admiralty to command Deal Castle (ADM 6/21, p.327).
