In 1816 the baptism record for his son Erest describes Sir Thomas Lavie as the Governor of the Royal Naval Asylum at St Alfege, Greenwich, Kent.

Captain Sir Thomas Lavie R.N. K.H. born 1765 died before 6 Feb 1822 in the Royal Naval Hospital;, Plymouth buried 6 Feb 1822 in Stoke Damerel. Sources press cuttings & Devon Burials Transcription.

My great great grandfather was Captain Frank Cutler, R.N. who was a prisoner of war during the Napoleonic wars. After he escaped in 1809 he earned a commendation from Sir Thomas Lavie: Upon his return to England he was recommended by Captain Sir Thomas Lavie ‘for exemplary conduct during long captivity and honourable means of effecting escape from prison.’
I would like to obtain further information about this episode in Capt. Cutler's life and hope that through Lavie I might be able to get the official account of his escape for which he was awarded "an escaper's medal."

I have written and transcribed more than 300 pages from primary sources on the life and times of this Naval Officer and Hero of the Napoleonic Wars, and I have portraits of him, and photos of significant items that he owned. I would be interested to know how you came to be interested in him. I am happy to share what I know. Many years ago I led a research group on him and his ancestors and descendants at the Society of Genealogists in London.

From Aug 1816 until 31 Mar 1821 he was Governor of the Royal Naval Asylum at Greenwich. The RNA was merged with Greenwich Hospital School in 1821 to form the Royal Hospital School, now at Holbrook, Suffolk, and all the staff of the RNA resigned, or were fired, en masse. On 1 July 1821, he was appointed commander of HMS Windsor, guardship at Plymouth. In November 1821 he was appointed Captain of HMS Superb, 74 guns, at Plymouth, and in December 1821 he was appointed to HMS Spencer, 74 guns, and died 1 Feb 1822 whilst still in command.
