The will actually states he is the 'late' commander of the Diamond, and that he is bound on a voyage. The two statements are unrelated, The voyage can not have been as commander of the Diamond, which was commanded by Thomas Jacobs from 1716 to 1720.

In his will of 1717 he states that he is commander of HMS Diamond and is about to set out on a voyage to the West Indies.
