Portsmouth, 23 November 1799: The Alert cutter, Lieutenant Innes, has taken a sloop laden with coals. He ran her on shore about four miles west of Treport, after a chace of three hours; he Lieutenant sent a boat manned and armed, commanded by the boatswain, who carried out her anchor to heave her off, amidst a heavy fire of musketry from the shore, and two field pieces brought down from the cliff. The Alert approached so near as to drive all the French from the beach, and, thus effect the capture of the sloop. [Hampshire Telegraph, 25 November 1799]

Portsmouth, 3 January 1801: The Alert cutter, Lieut Clark, has retaken and sent into this port, the Susannah, Skelton, from St Kitt’s to London, which had been captured by the Renard, French privateer. [Hampshire Chronicle, 5 January 1801]
