The Young Cromwell had previously been a British schooner named Saint George and was captured by the Oliver Cromwell in 1779.

When captured, Young Cromwell had 36 men on board (including officers) and was equipped with 12 cannons, all 3-pounders. (UK Archives, RC7020130, HCA 32/490/26, Deposition of Commander John Cook). News article in New London Gazette 03 May 1782 lists 18 of the crew who died aboard a prison ship.

Young Cromwell, schooner, issued with a Letter of Marque on the 5th day of Nov 1781. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of John Porter, Isaac Fitch, John Cook, Seth Harding, and Elisha Coit. John Cook, Master and Commander. Bound to Michael Michael Hillegas, Esq., Treasurer. Twelve carriage guns, 45-man crew. Owned by Joseph Williams & Co.
