Hi,
Is this the paddle steamer Hermes that, in March 1853, captured five pirate junks, ad sunk one, off Hong Kong? My information about this comes from the letters of William Melrose, a Scottish tea trader in Canton, who wrote about the incident to his father in Edinburgh. Apparently the junks had attempted to capture the Nymph, a ship sailing from Shanghai. The Nymph evaded them and made it to HK. At which point the Hermes was sent out to engage the pirates. Melrose saw the Hermes in HK after the fight and reported that her paddle boxes were quite holed with shot.
Any more information greatly appreciated.
