, off the west of Sardinia. The Alcion in vain attempted to shake her pursuer off, was overtaken, and at 2 A.M. on the 8th, after returning a few shots, struck her flag. She was apparently on her way back to Toulon from Alexandria, ignorant that war had broken out. As she was a fine vessel of her class, prodigiously fast, she was purchased for the Navy as the Halcyon.
