Paris, 22 April 1765: The following is a list of the ships of war in the harbour of Toulon when the last letters left that place: Tonnant, 80 guns; Hector, Couronne, Soverain, Protecteur, Guerrier, and Alerte, of 74; Fantasque, Lion, Triton, Sage, St Fraincois, Solitaire, Frier, and Valiant, of 64; with three of 60 guns built at Genoa, which are not yet named. Of frigates there were the Chimere of 32 guns, and the Topaze of 22. There were besides in the same harbour two chebecks of 16 guns each, and they were hard at work on the Entreprenant and Languedoc of 74 guns, the Bourgoyne, Marseillois, and Capricieux, of 64, and the Sultane of 40. London, 6 May 1765: They write from Toulon, that the Fantasque, and two large ships en flute, are soon to sail on a private expedition to the southern continent of America, but the exact place of distination was not known; tho’ the new discovered island near the Streights of Magellan was supposed to be their intended rout.
