London, 6 April 1751: On Sunday night, as Mr Cook, and Mr Banks, two Midshipmen of his Majesty’s ship the Boston, were gong over the fields to Deptford, in order to take the water there for Woolwich, they were attacked by three fellows armed with bludgeons, when the two gentlemen made a gallant resistance for a long time; but Mr Cook being knocked down, they were both robbed. Mr Cook lost his hat and one pound sixteen shillings; and Mr Banks lost four shillings and his watch. They were both of them very terribly beat; Mr Cook having lost one of his eyes, and Mr Banks lies at the point of death from the wounds he received. [Kentish Post, 10 April 1751]

London, 7 February 1751: Thursday the crew of the Mercury man of war, lately returned from their station off New-England, consisting of 120, and being turned over to the Boston, went in a body to petition the Lords of the Admiralty, before they entered on the Boston. Their Lordships acquainted them, that if they would repair on board without delay, their demands should be satisfied. [Kentish Post, 9 February 1751]
