The sloop was bought by the East India Company for Commodore William Cornwallis in 1790 with the command given to Midshipman John Whitby (age 16). It was taken on to the books of the Royal Navy on 28 December 1792, with Whitby promoted to Commander. Austin was his Senior Lieutenant.
