Advertisement: For sale at the Brokers’ Warehouse, Woolster Street, Plymouth, on Friday, the 15th day of May next, the standing and running rigging, sails, blocks, iron guns, brass swivels, muskets, shot, gunpowder, boarding-pikes, gun-carriages, legars, butts, and other casks, bread, beef, rice, calavances, with a variety of other stores and provisions, 9 casks coffee, 1 cask tin, 2 barrels sugar, 23 casks annatto, and 9 bales cotton, landed out of the French frigate La Dedaigneuse, captured by His Majesty’s ship L’Oiseau, Samuel Hood Linzee, Esq, commander, in sight of His Majesty’s ship L’Immortalite, Henry Hotham. Portsmouth, 14 February 1801: By letters from on board the Immortalite frigate, it appears that on the 26th ultimo , upon the clearing up of a fog, while her boat was in the act of boarding the Simon Taylor, she found herself in the midst of the French squadron under Admiral Gantheaume, consisting of five sail of the line, and two frigates. None of the enemy’s ships shewed any disposition to attack the Immortalite. They seemed, indeed, to have suffered very severely by the tempestuous weather, which had taken place a few days before. One or two of them had lost their top-masts, and they seemed otherwise much damaged. They were steering large for the Mediterranean. The Immortalite was immediately to sail for Gibraltar with the intelligence of this squadron, and no doubt was entertained of her getting there before it. [Hampshire Chronicle, 16 February 1801]
