He arrived in January 1717 .
With the support of Governor Varennes , it was decided to impose their will on the settler landowners and to compel them to obey .
In particular, to abandon certain cultures and to cease trade with abroad . The measures taken trigger a revolt of the great colonists , known as the Gaoulé (Chahut), at the end of which , on May 23 , the insurgents having seized the two Agents of the King , forced them to re-embark for France .
