This office was created in 1795 and was invariably held by a naval officer. The salary was originally £500. In 1838 the remuneration was increased to £800 which included an allowance of £300 for a house. In 1865 the salary was fixed at £1000 in addition to half pay. The office was filled on a temporary basis between 1823 and 1829.
