In April 1746, Admiral Reggio devised a plan to counterattack the English corsairs cutting the Spanish lines of communication.
Two xebecs commanded by Vicente de la Quintana and Luis de Velasco and the brig Diligente de Garaycoechea together with a sloop set off to clear the west of Cuba.
On the 22nd, they encountered Clymer's Cruizer and Lampriere's Fame's Revenge.
