Notes on Action

Notes on the actionB043

Shaw wrote from St. Christopher June 21 : "I have the honor to inform you that on the 17th inst. I fell in with the French privateer Le Cygne of four guns and fifty-seven men off Guadaloupe. She engaged me for twenty minutes, when she struck her colors. I have brought her in here."

The Cygne had come out of Basseterre, Guadeloupe, and attacked the Enterprise while becalmed, apparently not recognizing her character. The privateer had five killed and fourteen wounded, while the American loss was one killed and two wounded
