The Nautilus, Albany and North had accompanied Blonde on the original troop landing and remained to protect the harbour

American vessels present include Continental frigate Warren Commodore. Saltonstall, artillery brig Samuel master James Brown [burnt]
, and Hampden New Hampshire State brig [ex coal barge] and privateers Hunter and Defence) attempted
to escape along the west side of Long Island, but were cut off by Blonde, Camilla, and Galatea
and either captured or scuttled. A total of nine transports were captured. The other vessels, including Warren, Providence, and Diligent; the Massachusetts State Navy
ships Tyrannicide, Active, and Hazzard; a small number of privateers including Hector, Black Prince, Monmouth and Vengeance, and one surviving transport (the sloop Pidgeon) sailed up river only to be destroyed

The British squadron was commanded by Sir George Collier and comprised of six vessels: the 64-gun line-of-battle ship Raisonable, 32-gun frigates Blonde and Virginia, 28-gun frigate Greyhound, and 20-gun frigates Galatea and Camille. The Otter, a 14-gun sloop, accompanied the squadron from New York, but was lost in fog enroute and never arrived at the fleet’s rendezvous point at Monhegan Island
