The English squadron comprised the warship Hampshire under Captain Fletcher, mounting only 50 guns, HBC Royal Hudson’s Bay (200 t) commanded by Capt. Nicholas Smithsend and mounting 32 guns, and HBC Dering (a 3rd of this name owned by the HBC) (260 t) (Capt. Michael Grimington) mounting 36 guns.

In the course of 1697, Captain d'Iberville, a Canadian by birth, greatly distinguished himself in the waters of Newfoundland and Hudson's Bay; and in his ship, the Pelican, 50, rendered very considerable services to the French cause. English interests were, unfortunately, ill-protected there', the chief vessel on the station being no bigger craft than the Hampshire, 46, Captain John Fletcher. D'Iberville, with several armed ships in his company, fell in, on August 26th, with the Hampshire and some merchantmen under her convoy, and, after a hot action, sank the man-of-war, whose captain perished with her; and took or destroyed all her consorts. D'Iberville subsequently captured Fort Nelson.
