Notes on Action

DescriptionTRN4
On August 7th, the British brig-sloop Espoir, 14, Commander Loftus Otway Bland, 3 whilst in charge of a convoy in the Mediterranean, was attacked by a large Genoese pirate, the Liguria, 26.* The two ships began their battle at about 7 P.M. and fought till 11, when the Liguria struck. The indiscipline of the pirate's crew is probably the explanation of her easy defeat by a vessel so much her inferior in armament.
