Lieut James Procter was born 1782 at Rye, Sussex, son of Nathaniel and Anne Procter. Nathaniel was snr customs officer at Rye. His memorial is in Rye parish church.
His younger brother, William, was Comptroller of Customs in 1829 at Hobart Tasmania in the early years of the colony.
