His date of rank as a Lieutenant was 24 Feb 1766 per various Navy Lists (at least through the 1784 list). He was commissioned to Culloden (3d/74) on 10 July 1776, to Raisonable (3d/64) on 22 Feb 1777, Royal George (1st/100) on 25 July 1778 and Queen (2d/90) on 19 Nov 1778 (ref: ADM6/21, pp. 199, 205, 206,261, 438,, 476, 541 & ADM 6/22, p. 60)
