The two John Inglis's are confused here. "Lieut John Inglis (2d)" became Commander "John Inglis (1st)" when promoted to command HMS Senegal, Sloop, effective 11 Apr 1778 [when he was in England, the ship in North America] (ADM6/21,p.390, where he is called "John Inglis (2d)"). He actually came to America as 3d Lieut, HMS Trident, with Capt John Eliott who had orders promoting himself to Commodore when clear of soundings and commissions for Commander Anthony James Pye Molloy (then commanding HMS Senegal, Sloop) as flag-captain, HMS Trident, and Lieutenant John Inglis (2d) as Commander, HMS Senegal. The former Lieutenant John Inglis (1st) became Commander John Inglis (2d) when promoted Commander, HMS Delight, Sloop, on 22 May 1779 (ADM 6/21, p.558)

There are two John Inglis. See National Archive Admiralty record ADM 1/1988. The senior of the two commanded Zephyr and Pandora. He died in 1789. The junior commanded the other vessel above and went on the Captain Coromandel and Belliqueux. He died on 1807 having reached the rank of Vice Admiral
