My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was Philip Somerville and then through his son John Byron Somerville.

Hi , I am related to Capt Philip Somerville (c1761 - 1817 through his son, George Field Somerville lineage and am trying to locate Philip Somerville’s parents. It has been suggested that his father might have been a William Sommervill who was a mate on HMS Duke and that he married a Mary Henry. This William was listed as Will Somerwell in the ship’s muster. There are inconsistencies between this William and Captain Philip Somerville’s naval récord a dates nd status that bring into question if William Sommerwill and Philip Somerville are indeed father and son. Does anyone else have any thoughts or evidence on this matter?

I am a professor at the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw. I prepared for printing an anthology of philosophical works of the son-in-low of Francis Somerville, Krystyn Lach-Szyrma. I would like to put some of his portraits in this anthology and (on what I really care about) a photograph of his tombstone in Stoke. If somone of you have in possession such portraits and photographs of the tombstone - I would be very grateful if you would send me a copy (scan) of them.

Many thanks Brian for posting this obituary. I am descended from his daughter Sarah Frances Field Somerville. I have just found Past captain Philip Somerville's will on Find My Past - Devon Wills Index. Nine pages, too long to post here.

The Gentleman's magazine. v.121 1817.
At St. Aubyn-street, Plymouth Dock, after a long and painful illness, which he contracted in the West Indies, aged 54, Capt. P. Somerville, of the Royal Navy, leaving a wife and six children. He commenced his naval career at an early age, as cadet, under Earl St. Vincent, in the Foudroyant; and successfully served with him and Lord Radstock as Midshipman. He attained the rank of lieutenant Sept. 4, 1782, and served with Lord Howe as his first Lieutenant in the Queen Charlotte; and on his Lordship striking his flag, had the honour of receiving his promotion as a commander, April 9, 1786 and was appointed to command the Eugenie. He commanded a division of boats under Lord Nelson at the attack of Boulogne, where he was wounded. His division was the only one that succeeded in getting on board the enemy. April 20, 1802 he attained the rank of Post Captain, and was appointed ti the Nemesis; he was removed from her to the Rota in 1809 and continued in the command of that ship until she was paid off, having completed 40 years of active service.
