Memorial plaque on the wall of St. David’s church, Ashprington, Devon reads: ‘To the memory of John Bastard, of Sharpham, esqr., captain in the Royal Navy, who was born on the XXVth of January MDCCLXXXVII, and died on the XIth of January MDCCCXXXV. This tablet is dedicated by his affectionate widow’
