The tale of Captain Knox is told by his son, also Captain Robert Knox, in his very much annotated "An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon in the East Indies". EIC Governor Josia Childs thought a publication describing Knox's rescue from 19 years of captivity in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) would embellish the Company's reputation, and share price – a copy of the book would end up in the possession of Joseph Banks on the Endeavour (Banks, 1896[2011]).
