The admiral had a nephew Miguel Ricardo de Álava y Esquivel, who although a captain of a frigate, served as a marine on board his uncle's flagship at Trafalgar. Subsequently Miguel Ricardo de Álava y Esquivel transferred to the Spanish army and was posted to Wellington's staff in the Peninsular as Spanish liaison officer, serving until peace in 1814. Posted to Brussels by the Spanish government, he was able to rejoin Wellington's staff in 1815 and became one of only two men who fought at both Trafalgar and Waterloo.
