byran perrett thinks C S Forester used Gordon as his model for Hornblower. Forester's real model is Admiral Sir Edmund Nagle. Nagle was commodore of the Royal Yacht, Nagle was a commander-in-chief of a RN staion off the coast of France, Nagle married a 'Maria', Nagle was made a baronet, Nagle knew personally the Regent, his father George III, and his younger brother William IV, as well as the Duke of Wellington. Nagle ended up with significant interests in the West Indies. Gordon achieved none of those things.
