Osboene is described as a "commodore" as early as the summer of 1744 and I believe he was a formally appointed commodore with a "flag" captain for the ship he was in by 1745. Charnock, IV, 197, says that "in the autumn [of 1745] he was appointed commodore of a squadron stationed off he Italian coast, and on this occasion removed into the Essex," which had her own captain. As noted above, he was by then no longer captain of /Princess Caroline/, which had returend to England
