Alexander Allen's initial commission as Lieutenant was made by VAdm John Monatagu on the Newfoundland station to command HM Armed Schooner Egmont (not HM Armed Schooner Earl of Egmont which had paid off on 06 Oct 1772 & sold) [ADM 6/21, p.229]. Two months later on 19 Oct Montagu commissioned him as Lieut., HMS Cygnet, Sloop [ADM 6/21, .259]. On 20 Mar 1778 Admiralty commissioned him 4th Lieut., HMS Albion, 3d/74 [ADM 6/21/381] but a month later starting 17 Apr 1778 Admiralty began a string of commissions to HMS Duke, 2d/90 [ADM 6/21, pp. 391,423,442,500]. On 22 Feb 1779 Admiralty commissioned him 2d Lieut., HMS Belleisle, 3d/64 [ADM 6/21, p.513)
