Lord Alexander Ogilvy

I'm more confused than ever after both John George and Alexander die, who takes on the role at the 7th Lord Banff and Why? If Alexander did not have any children, where does the lineage go?

“The present Disposal of His Magts Ships and Veſsels in Sea Pay, 1 Sepr. 1744” ADM 8/024, gives the captain of /Hastings/ as "L[or]d Banff." A Wikipedia article on the title does list John George Ogilvie (1717–1738) as 5th Lord Banff, Alexander Ogilvie (1718–1746) as 6th Lord Banff. Alexander Ogilvie would never have been "Lord Alexander Ogilvie." As a younger son of a baron he would have been "the Honourable Alexander Ogilvie." This would not have changed when his father died and he became the heir presumptive of his brother's title. After his brother's death in 1738, he succeeded to the barony and became Baron Banff of Lord Banff; he had the title by the time he was commissioned a lieutenant, but must have been "Hon. Alexander Ogilvie" as a midshipman.
To look him up in Charnock, /Biographia Navalis/, you have to look under "Banff," not Ogilvie. There seems to be variation or confusion about the spelling of the name--whether it should end in "-ie" or "-y."
