Very interested in Sheelagh McKenie's post re: Samuel Brokensha, who is my 2nd cousin 5 x removed. I have researched Samuel extensively and would love to hear any evidence of him being a smuggler. In 1794 he was Master of the brigantine Sophia of Fowey.

Brockensha escaped from French revolution with my ancestor Jos Ramsay and Mr Weslesley, brother of Lord Wellington, landing in Mevagissey in January 1795. He had been a smuggler previously and it was his knowledge of the route from Breast to Cornwall that saved their lives. Mr Wellesley rewarded him by making him a Master of a Frigate. I think this is the same Brockensha as the dates tally.
