John Harvey Boteler lived for a while after the Napoleonic war at Wickham near Canterbury, three or four miles from his cousin John Harvey at Woodlands, and died at St. Leonards on April 19th, 1885.

Boteler published a rambling and gossipy memoir, "Recollections of My Sea Life 1808-1830" in 1883, republished by the Published by Navy Records Society in 1952. He was a cousin to the Harveys of Eastry, Kent, an important naval family.
