During his career, Morpain enjoyed astonishing success as a privateer. In 1706, on his own, he sailed up to the New England coast where he made two major captures, a slave ship and a frigate laden with provisions. Having sailed on the nearest French port, he anchored at Port-Royal, in August 1707, his two catches in tow.The arrival of food supplies was greeted by the locals as a manifestation of Providence ; by June Port-Royal had come under the siege of 1,600 New England troops under John March and supplies were exhausted. A week after Morpain’s arrival, still larger forces stormed again but were forced to withdraw. In his report to the Minister of the Navy, Pontchartrain, Governor Daniel d'Auger de Subercase said: Morpain with his buccaneers "helped us beat them well and left us 700 quarts of flour without which we would infallibly have been embarrassed". At the first and Second Siege of Port Royal , Acadia. Morpain returned to Saint-Domingue with his captive slaves. | ref:631 |
