When VAdm Clark Gayton, CinC Jamaica, received instructions from Admiralty to re-establish HM Racehorse, Armed Sloop, as a Sloop of War, Gayton immediately commissioned/promoted Thomas Cadogan to command (ADM 6/21, p.293); however, Racehorse was then at sea under command of Lieut. William Jones and was captured by the USS Andrew Doria on 08 Dec 1776 in the vicinity of Turks & Caicos islands. Cadogan was appointed Commander of the newly purchased brig Porcupine (ex-Union), commissioned/established as a Sloop on 28 Mar 1777 (see: ADM 34/1247 & 51/707)

The Hon'ble Thomas Cadogan was promoted Captain on 20 Feb 1779 to commission the new HMS Formidible, 2d rate/90 (ADM 6/21, p.369) then 3 weeks later was posted to command HMS Licorne on 12 Mar 1779 (ibid., p. 523) superseding Captain Henry Bellew.
