| 12.12.1783 | Petition of Stratford Adams, late of Rotherhithe, Prisoner in the Four Courts Marshalsea, sworn before Charles Walker, for relief from his debts. He was the Master and Owner of the Joseph and employed William Harrington, a Cork Ship Carpenter, to repair the ship when it was damaged in 1774. He was not able to pay the full costs and Sampson Stawell of Kilbritain in Cork agreed to advance him the money required if the ship was assigned to him. He continued trading but suffered losses and was declared bankrupt. He surrendered all his estate to the authorities but was then held responsible for Mr. Stawell's debts which were due to Mr. Leary of Kinsale and Mr. Langstaff. In 1779 his discharge certificate was signed by Edward Lord Thurlow, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. To support his wife and family he enlisted in the Navy and served as Sailing Master on battle ships during the war. At the end of the war he was appointed to the command of a trading vessel and sailed to Cork where he was arrested for the debt owed to Sampson Stawell, who had sued for the money at the Tholsel Court in Cork. The petitioner has only £5 and a debt of £300 due to him from Isaac Morgan, a City of Cork merchant, who he is suing for payment so that he can pay his creditors. | ADM 106 | |
